• The device names you normally use.
• Approximate timing of the lockout or suspicious message, without sharing passwords.
• Screenshots of warnings, with balances, full addresses, and personal documents hidden where possible.
• A clean, trusted device and a network you control.

When people ask me what is Coinbase, I explain it this way: Coinbase is a custodial crypto service for accounts where the company can help with certain account access issues. That is different from a self-custody wallet such as MetaMask, where the recovery phrase is controlled by you.

How do I troubleshoot wallet access problems safely?

Follow these steps in order. The order matters because an attacker may already control email, messages, or a device.

One. Pause all replies to unexpected contacts. If someone contacted you first and claims to be coinbase support, treat it as unsafe until proven otherwise. Real support should not need your wallet recovery phrase, MetaMask password, or remote access to your screen.

Two. Secure your email account. Your email is often the reset path for custodial services. How does wallet recovery work, and what can support not do?

Wallet recovery depends on who controls the keys.

With a custodial account, the service controls the account system. Coinbase support may be able to help you regain account access after checks, review a lockout, restrict activity, or explain account status. They cannot make an irreversible blockchain transfer come back simply because it was unwanted.

With a self-custody wallet such as MetaMask, you control the recovery phrase. That phrase is a list of words created when the wallet is set up. It is not a normal password, and it is not something a support agent can look up. If you lose it and no device still has access, support cannot recreate it for you.

The MetaMask password on a browser or phone usually protects access on that local device. It is not the same as the recovery phrase. If the browser profile is removed, the phone is replaced, or the app data is wiped, the local password alone may not restore the wallet.

What are the most common wallet access problems?

I lost my phone with Coinbase and MetaMask on it

Start with email security and account sessions. For Coinbase, use official coinbase support routes to report possible account exposure and review access. For MetaMask, the key question is whether someone could unlock the phone or wallet. If yes, move remaining funds from another trusted device if you still have the recovery phrase.

Coinbase says my account is locked

An account lockout can happen for security review, suspicious activity, failed access attempts, or identity-related checks. Support may ask you to complete verification inside official channels. They should not ask for your MetaMask recovery phrase, because that phrase does not prove your Coinbase identity.

My MetaMask password stopped working

Check whether you are on the same browser profile or device where the wallet was created. If the local wallet data changed, the password may not help. Recovery usually requires the wallet recovery phrase or an existing unlocked session.

Someone says they can recover stolen crypto for a fee

Be careful. Recovery scammers often promise special access to the blockchain or claim to work with exchange staff. In real incident response, I look for evidence, secure remaining accounts, and preserve records. I do not trust anyone who demands the recovery phrase or tells you to install remote control software.

I approved something suspicious

If you connected a wallet to a harmful site or approved a token permission, stop using that site. From a trusted environment, consider moving funds to a fresh wallet you control.
